The 65th Venice Film Festival, ‘The Ides of March,’ opened this weekend. There were many celebrities present, including George Clooney, Madonna, Colin Firth, Kate Winslet, Keira Knightley, Evan Rachel Wood and Jude Law.

Risk factors for cancers of the oral cavity, pharynx (cavity excluded) and larynx Objective > To review the risk factors for squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity, pharynx, and larynx. Methods > Review of the literature using the Medline digital database (1980–2007). Previously published studies or studies not found in the database were included if relevant. Four types of studies were selected: (1) epidemiological, (2) toxicologic, (3) clinical, and (4) fundamental research. Publications concerning cancer of the nasopharynx were excluded. This work is based upon the ANAES guide for analysis of the literature and rating of guidelines, published in January 2000. Results > The principal risk factors are tobacco and alcohol. Other risk factors, particularly infectious (viral) or environmental (nutritional and occupational), are also involved. Runoff for parliamentary elections in nine governorates today By YOUM7 STAFF – Translated by AMANY SABER Runoff of the first phase of the parliamentary elections will be held in nine Egyptian governorates today December 5. Cairo, Alexandria, Damietta, Port Said, Red Sea, Kafr el- Sheikh, Asyut, Luxor and Fayoum will have polling stations ready for the voters. It is going to be a matter of whether the Muslim Brotherhood -affiliated Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) will sweep the runoffs or an electoral fight will stay as dispute between political forces. Heirs of NDP stalwart blocked from accessing family fortune

An Egyptian judicial authority on Tuesday issued an order preventing the heirs of the late National Democratic Party MP Kamal al-Shazly from accessing their money and real estate as investigations continue into allegations of corruption against al-Shazly. According to a statement issued by the Deputy Minister of Justice for the Illicit Gains Authority, Assem al-Gohary, the decision involved al-Shazliy’s wife, two sons and daughter. The statement noted that the Administrative Control Authority’s investigations confirmed that al-Shazly accumulated his fortune by illegal means through the abuse of his authority. Al-Shazly died in November at the age of 74. He served as minister for parliamentary affairs from 1993 to 2004, after which he was responsible for overseeing the Specialized National Councils, a body composed of committees that study and research socio-economic problems.
