Obama’s Trip Underscores Asia’s Importance   President Obama will visit India, Indonesia, South Korea and Japan November 6–14. By Stephen Kaufman Staff Writer Washington — Senior White House officials say President Obama’s nine-day visit to India, Indonesia, South Korea and Japan is aimed at renewing U.S. engagement across Asia through established alliances and deepening partnerships with emerging powers. The president’s November 6–14 visit includes meetings of the Group of 20 (G20) major economies in Seoul and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum (APEC) in Yokohama. In a White House briefing October 28, Ben Rhodes, deputy national security adviser for strategic communications, said Obama’s visit to the four countries “sends a strong signal of the ability of democracy to thrive within Asia and the ability of robust economic development to take place within emerging democracies as well as established ones.” The rise of economic growth in Asia “is one of the defining

Rasmussen: Why I left Google for Facebook Lars Rasmussen shows off Google Wave in May 2009. (Credit: James Martin/CNET) One of the lead engineers behind Google Maps and Google Wave has left the Web powerhouse to get into the thick of the "compelling" action at Facebook. Last Friday, Lars Rasmussen said goodbye to his six-year career at Google; he'll start his new job at Facebook in December following a vacation. The noted Sydney, Australia-based software developer explained why he jumped ship in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald. "It feels to me that Facebook may be a sort of once-in-a-decade type of company," Rasmussen told the Herald. "Obviously they've already changed the world and yet there seems to be so much more to be done there. And I think that it's the right place for me to be." The size of Facebook versus that of Google was another reason for the job hop, according to Rasmussen. Comparing Google's 25,000

Did Apple pay big bucks in iAds settlement? A trademark lawsuit filed against Apple by a Web advertising firm over the term "iAds" was quietly settled in July. No one has disclosed exactly how the case was resolved but Apple now owns the "iAds" trademark, and last week a company peripherally involved in the suit posted a note to the Web that said Apple paid a "seven-figure settlement." At Apple's iOS 4 event on April 8, CEO Steve Jobs announced Apple's iAds program. A month later, Innovate Media, an online ad agency headquartered near Los Angeles, filed a trademark suit against Apple. Innovate Media had used the term since 2006 and was granted two trademarks (3,515,183 and 3,515,184) for "iAds" in October 2008. Copy of a note posted to the Web on October 28 by Consort. We've seen Apple caught up in plenty of these trademark disputes before and just like many of those, this one was settled without a peep from either pa

GM: Without software, Chevy Volt is stuck in neutral

GM: Without software, Chevy Volt is stuck in neutral The Chevy Volt is as much a software engineering accomplishment as it was a mechanical engineering challenge, according to General Motors. General Motors today plans to bring the Chevy Volt to IBM's Raleigh, N.C., offices to show off the electric car and celebrate its partnership with IBM's software business in making the Volt. With the Volt, GM aimed to not only break new ground in electric powertrains but it also decided to make a demonstrably high-tech car, complete with an Internet connection and smartphone-inspired in-car controls. To make that happen, software engineers took on one of the most sophisticated projects at GM, said Micky Bly, executive director of electrical systems, hybrids, electric vehicles and batteries at GM. "We haven't done a vehicle this complex in the history of GM," Bly said on Friday. "The software--the control side--is what ties together (the mechanical component

Laptop nightmares: Scary systems with fatal flaws The Halloween season my be winding down, but that doesn't mean there aren't still plenty of scary laptops out there. Of course, the vast are pretty decent examples of technology. After all, there are only a handful of common components used in most systems, and things such as speed and battery life are, if not standardized, at least largely predictable based on the list of what's inside the box. That said, we occasionally run into a laptop that just rubs us the wrong way. Maybe it's a key missing feature, or terrible design, or an unusable touch pad--or sometimes products simply don't work as advertised. We've compiled our own list of the scariest laptops of 2010, the models that either had one or more frightening flaws, or else were just dogs. Some of these are bargain basement budget systems, but don't think we're just picking on laptops that are cheap. We love inexpensive lapto

Tension reigns in MLS title race

Tension reigns in MLS title race   All four of Major League Soccer’s first round of play-off clashes are poised on one-goal margins heading into the second legs this week. Heavy favourites Los Angeles Galaxy, led by superstar duo of David Beckham and Landon Donovan, edged the Sounders 1-0 in Seattle while a Thierry Henry-less New York Red Bulls take the same lead back home from San Jose. Title holders Real Salt Lake lost out 2-1 to FC Dallas in the most exciting game of the lot – and the only one to produce more than two goals – as Colorado Rapids edged out 2008 champions Columbus Crew 1-0 in Denver. The Galaxy didn’t have things all their own way in their tense clash with the two-time defending US Open Cup winners in front of a vociferous crowd up in Seattle, but their one-goal lead should be enough to get the job done. The goal came courtesy of USA international Edson Buddle and was a thing of beauty. Turning on an awkwardly bouncing ball some 35 yards from goal, he ho

Obama sees tight races, urges turnout  The Republican ticket, meanwhile, planned to spend a second straight day Sunday on a Downstate swing, where turnout will be vital to offset the one-sided advantage Democrats expect to gain in Chicago and suburban Cook County. Senate candidate Mark Kirk and gubernatorial candidate Bill Brady scheduled stops in Moline, Quincy, Sycamore and Peoria before finishing the day at a get-out-the-vote rally at Joe’s Bar on Weed Street in Old Town, where the candidates were to be joined by U.S. Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.). Asked at Valois how he feels about his side’s chances Tuesday, Obama said, “I feel great, we’ve got good turnout. Pat’s gonna win, Alexi’s going to win. That’s why turnout is so important. We’ve seen a lot of enthusiasm, but it’s going to be tight. These are close races. It’s true here. It’s true in Ohio. It’s true in every state where we’re competing. And obviously, the other side is enthusiastic. We’ve got to make sure o
