Two Egyptians brothers have won an international award for an environmental project to develop solar cells made from plants instead of silicon, the Society for the Age of Science announced Saturday.

The "Green Apple Environmental" was awarded to Mohammad Badran, 13, and Mahmoud Mohamed Badran, 10, for their environmental business venture idea, "the development of solar cells made from plant material."

Their project was selected from more than 500 projects from all over the world.

The two young brothers applied last year for a patent for invention at the Egyptian Academy of Scientific Research and then joined the Union of Inventors, receiving many local and international awards.

According to a statement by the society, the brothers will travel to England with cultural representatives of the society to receive the award at a ceremony at the British House of Commons Nov. 14, under the auspices of the European Commission.

The two young inventors are now completing their training for the manufacture of solar cells known as "Garetsial" at a nanotech laboratory under the supervision of professors and specialists to create a prototype.

The invention aims to tackle the problem of increasing carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere by reducing petroleum use.
