Photographs of the rubbish-strewn home where the body of a toddler murdered by his mother was found have been released by prosecutors.
Kimberley Hainey, 37, was last month found guilty by a majority verdict of murdering her son Declan at a flat in Paisley, Renfrewshire.
She was also convicted of failing to report Declan’s death to police or other authorities and of concealing his body in the flat while pretending he was alive for eight months.
Hainey will be sentenced tomorrow at the High Court in Glasgow.
Images released by the Crown Office today show rooms in the flat piled with rubbish.
One shows what appears to be a travel cot or playpen filled with empty plastic bottles and debris while others show apparently mouldy milk bottles.
The cause of Declan’s death is not known but he is said to have last been seen alive when he was 15 months old.
His body was discovered at the flat on March 30, 2010 when he would have been 23 months old. Experts estimate he had been dead in his cot for anything up to eight months.
Hainey pretended the child was being cared for by family members or that he was at nursery, leading people to believe he was still alive.
Following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow, she was found guilty of wilfully ill-treating, neglecting and abandoning the toddler and exposing him in a manner that was likely to cause him suffering or injury to his health.
She left him alone for 'excessive' periods of time and failed to provide him with adequate nourishment and fluids.
After the guilty verdict was announced, Strathclyde Police Detective Inspector Maxine Martin said: “Declan Hainey’s murder was a horrible, tragic case.
'I doubt that anyone involved in the investigation or anyone who heard or read anything about the circumstances through the media will have come across anything quite as harrowing or distressing as this.
'You cannot begin to comprehend Declan’s suffering, nor can you begin to understand how a mother could have done this to their innocent, helpless child.
'There was one person and one person alone responsible for Declan’s murder and that was Kim (Kimberley) Hainey. She deceived everyone who was close to her.
'She went out of her way to conceal what she did from her friends, her family and from the various agencies who wanted only to help her.'
The Crown is considering whether a Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) should be held into his death.
